“Ashampoo Magical Defrag runs in the background as a service, defragmenting when necessary to keep the hard disk tidy. The great thing about this is that the program manages it without ‘stealing’ any processor power from the user. Ashampoo Magical Defrag only activates when enough unused resources are available and stops immediately whenever the user does anything that requires more computer capacity — when a program is started or used.”

“There are a number of NT disk defraggers on the market. These tools are useful for performing a general defragmentation of disks, but while most files are defragmented on drives processed by these utilities, some files may not be. In addition, it is difficult to ensure that particular files that are frequently used are defragmented – they may remain fragmented for reasons that are specific to the defragmentation algorithms used by the defragging product that has been applied. Finally, even if all files have been defragmented, subsequent changes to critical files could cause them to become fragmented. Only by running an entire defrag operation can one hope that they might be defragmented again.
“Contig is a single-file, console tool defragmenter that attempts to make files contiguous on disk. Its perfect for quickly optimizing files that are continuously becoming fragmented, or that you want to ensure are in as few fragments as possible. Contig can be used to defrag an existing file, or to create a new file of a specified size and name, optimizing its placement on disk.”

“MyDefrag (formerly ‘JkDefrag’) is a disk defragmenter and optimizer (a maintenance utility to make your harddisk faster) for Windows 2000, 2003, XP, Vista, 2008, and for X64. It is freeware, no time limit, fully functional, no advertisements. Fast, low overhead, with many optimization strategies, can handle floppies, USB disks, memory sticks, and anything else that looks like a disk to Windows. Included are a set of easy to use scripts for endusers, a scripting engine for demanding users, a screensaver, and a combined Windows plus commandline version that can be scheduled by the Windows task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts.
“MyDefrag is extremely easy to use. All you have to do is choose one of the items in the Windows start menu, for example ‘Fast Optimize’, and MyDefrag will run and optimize all the disks on your computer. It’s completely automatic. Advanced users can build their own scripts and customize just about every aspect of MyDefrag, but the rest if us only need a single click. And some patience, because optimizing your disks can take a long time.
“The following scripts are included in the MyDefrag distribution. My advise for new users is to run ‘Slow Optimize’ the first time (this will take a looooong time!!!) and after that run ‘Fast Update’ once per day.”

“One of the limitations of the Windows NT/2000 defragmentation interface is that it is not possible to defragment files that are open for exclusive access. Thus, standard defragmentation programs can neither show you how fragmented your paging files or Registry hives are, nor defragment them. Paging and Registry file fragmentation can be one of the leading causes of performance degradation related to file fragmentation in a system.
“PageDefrag uses advanced techniques to provide you what commercial defragmenters cannot: the ability for you to see how fragmented your paging files and Registry hives are, and to defragment them. In addition, it defragments event log files and Windows 2000/XP hibernation files (where system memory is saved when you hibernate a laptop).”
